White Chalk Pill (Bai E Wan):
This formula treats women with irregular menstruation, where periods may come twice a month, not come at all, or vary in flow (too much, too little, or continuous bleeding). Symptoms may include lower back and abdominal pain, poor appetite, and discolored menstrual blood (blue, yellow, or black).
- Ingredients: White Chalk, White Talc, Oyster Shell, Yu Yu Liang, Dragon Bone, Asarum (Xi Xin), Cuttlefish Bone (1.5 liang each), Angelica (Dang Gui), Peony (Shao Yao), Scutellaria (Huang Lian), Poria (Fu Ling), Dried Ginger, Cinnamon, Ginseng, Qu Mai, Stone Fern, Bai Zhi, Bai Lian, Aconite, Licorice, Chuan Pepper (1 liang each).
Grind these 21 ingredients into a powder, form them into pills the size of a wuzi (about the size of a small berry) with honey. Take 20 pills on an empty stomach with wine, three times a day. When menstruation starts, increase to four or five doses daily for the best results.
Peach Kernel Decoction (Tao Ren Tang):
This formula treats post-partum women or those with irregular menstrual flow, continuous dripping after menstruation, abdominal pain, or heaviness in the body. Symptoms include alternating feelings of warmth and cold, poor appetite, and frequent thoughts of sour foods.

Boil these 14 ingredients in 2 dou of water until reduced to 6.5 sheng. Divide into six doses.
Apricot Kernel Decoction (Ren Tang):
This formula treats irregular menstruation that comes either too frequently or infrequently (monthly, every two to three months), or is blocked.
- Ingredients: Apricot Kernels (2 liang), Peach Kernels (1 liang), Rhubarb (3 liang), Water Leech and Horsefly (30 each).
Boil these 5 ingredients in 6 sheng of water until reduced to 2 sheng. Divide into three doses. Depending on the amount of blood expelled through the stool, stop if large amounts are discharged.
